Season Change: Prepping your Skin for a new Season

Updated: May 13, 2020

Welcoming the change of season for your skin is like swapping out your winter coat, beanie and gloves for your summer skirts, dresses and bikini. It feels natural to swap out winter clothes in the change of season. So why not do it for your skincare regime?

Now, don't get me wrong I'm not saying to find completely different products four times a year. That'd be a slightly expensive task.

Starting with solid core skincare basic to ensure healthy, glowy and protected skin all year round!

Core skincare basics such as...

  1. Oil or Balm Cleanser (at night only, to take makeup off) and a Water-Based Cleanser (morning and night after cleansing oil/balm)

  2. Exfoliator- skin concern dependent

  3. Eye cream- skin concern dependent

  4. Serum- skin concern dependent

  5. Moisturiser/ Facial oil

  6. SPF- in order to minimise the routine to suit you. You can spot this in moisturiser or foundation or make your SPF your primer.

Skin concern?? Think about what skincare problems you have and what outcome you want to see. Think of the exfoliator, eye cream and serum as your filling in your burger. It's vital nourishment to your skincare routine.

Core ingredients such as...

  1. Hyaluronic acid- achieves plump, hydrated and super soft skin. It also reduces inflammation, prevents water loss and boosts skin's elasticity.

  2. Vitamin C- An antioxidant that fights against free radical damage, strengthens collagen, brightens and treats the look of pigmentation caused by sun damage and smooth skin's texture.

  3. AHA's- The powerful yet gentle chemical exfoliators are Lactic acid, Malic acid and Mandelic acid. To reveal smooth and even-toned skin. Drawing in hydration and dissolving the bond of dead skin cells, to let the fresh new glowy skin shine.

  4. Retinol ester/ Trans-retinol ester- aids in reducing the appearance of pores, wrinkles, fine lines, uneven texture, discolouration, and pores and promotes clearer skin without the drawbacks of retinol.

  5. Marula oil/ Argan oil- powerful antioxidants and essential fatty acids to nourish and protect skin from free radicals and environmental aggressors. It improves the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, redness and any skin unevenness while granting a youthful glow. Marula oil will assist congested skin without clogging pores.

These Skincare steps can be swapped around not only from your day to night routine but from season to season. It won't cost a fortune but quality does count because your skincare is an investment, not an expense!

After you have found the personalised skin routine that works for you, it is easier to adapt it to how your skin changes throughout the year. Cleansers and moisturisers are the two main steps to adapt from season to season. Moisturising options; In summer use a small amount, or choose a gel moisturiser- this can be modified all year round, or use a facial oil before your moisturiser come winter-time, or just double layer your moisturiser. As for cleansers, opting for a cream cleanser in the winter and a gel cleanser in the summer will keep your skin feel balance and not stripped. In Autumn and Spring, your skins in the in-between stages of the dramatic season change Summer and Winter play. Small adjustments can be made, such as using a cream cleanser in the morning and a gel cleanser at night, or rinsing your skin with water in the mornings and a more nourishing, yet active skincare at night.

Likewise, listen to your skin. If a product isn't working for you shelf it, give your skin some air-time to recover, do research, check ingredients and if your skin revisits that product make sure you're not trying any other new products too.
